Job vacancies at CLS

The IOE’s Department of Social Science are look to recruit two new members of staff to join the Centre for Longitudinal Studies. The vacancies are for a Research Associate (Survey Manager) and a Database Manager. See below for further details about the vacancies and how to apply.

Please note these posts are based in the IOE’s Department of Social Science, where CLOSER is also based. These posts are not based in CLOSER.

 


Research Associate (Survey Manager)

Applicants are invited for a Research Associate (Survey Manager) position in the Department of Social Science (DSS) which houses the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) and Cohorts and Longitudinal Studies Enhancement Resources (CLOSER), ESRC Resource Centres. The Centre for Longitudinal Studies has responsibility for and manages four of Britain’s internationally renowned birth cohort studies.

This post represents an exciting opportunity for a survey manager to contribute join a vibrant team of survey managers working on the development and implementation of four major longitudinal surveys: Next Steps, MCS, BCS70 and NCDS.

As part of the survey management team the post holder will work on the development of all four cohort studies housed in CLS. Working closely with the rest of the survey management team, you will ensure that the cohort studies are designed, developed and delivered to a high standard, with high rates of participation.

Duties will include carrying out a range of research activities including questionnaire design, writing research protocols, preparing submissions for ethical review and carrying out data analysis.

This is available from November 2017 until 31 March 2020 in the first instance.

Key Requirements

The successful candidate should have an MSc or equivalent experience in a relevant social science discipline. Experience of survey management with large-scale surveys and should have a good understanding of ethical issues in survey research.

Database Manager

Applicants are invited for a Database Manager position in the Department of Social Science (DSS) which houses the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) and Cohorts and Longitudinal Studies Enhancement Resources (CLOSER), ESRC Resource Centres.

The Centre for Longitudinal Studies has responsibility for and manages four of Britain’s internationally renowned cohort studies. The cohort studies follow individuals throughout their lives. They involve multiple surveys, together with other specialised forms of data collection (for example physical measurements and biological samples), and linkages to administrative records. The information collected is broad, covering areas as diverse as education, employment, and income, family and parenting, physical and mental health, and social attitudes.

The successful candidate will be recruited to assist with the ongoing task of developing, supporting and maintaining the integrity of the CMSM databases, so that they are robust, up-to-date, and accurate. This a key role in the existing database management team and the successful candidate  will be given responsibility for one of four Cohort Studies initially with mentoring support provided for an agreed period.

This post is available immediately and funded until 31st March 2020 in the first instance.

Key Requirements

Applicants must have a first degree in a relevant discipline or an equivalent relevant qualification, or equivalent relevant experience. You will have proven skills and experience in the use of, MS SQL Server Database Development, MS SQL Server Data Tools /SQL Server Integration Services, SQL (Structured Query Language), preferably T-SQL and Data Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL). A high degree of accuracy in your work, and the ability to work to deadlines is essential.
