Job description

The Understanding Society Communications Manager is a vital role within the Understanding Society team, requiring initiative, skill, experience and vision, to create a significant change in the external profile of the Study and its reach amongst a diverse range of audiences. Understanding Society is the largest national longitudinal survey in the UK; collecting data annually across a wide range of topics from everyone in 40,000 households across the country. This allows researchers to investigate how different aspects of people’s lives impact on each other and on other members of their family over time making it a vital resource for scientific advance and policy understanding.  Notwithstanding our success to date (over 6,000 data users, 64,000 participants we communicate with regularly,  85,000 visitors to the website in the last year, and 9,000 people engaged through social media) we now require a significant step-up in communications, marketing and branding, which the post holder will lead. The post holder will work closely with the researchers who lead the study and be part of a wider communications infrastructure within ISER and the University, and will need to network with other longitudinal studies, academic and policy networks.

The postholder requires an undergraduate degree and a communications qualification or equivalent experience, an interest in social and economic issues and a good understanding of social science research. They should have significant experience working in marketing, and brand development, and communications activities more broadly.

At the University of Essex internationalism is central to who we are and what we do. We are committed to being a cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented university that is welcoming to staff and students from all countries and a university where you can find the world in one place.
